According to the ASPCA, "Five out of ten dogs in shelters and seven out of ten cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them." Save a life, save a rescue, support your local shelter!
You get to interview your new friend - most shelters let you spend a little time with your potential adoptee so you can make sure he/she is a good fit. And since most shelter dogs aren't puppies, you can get a good feel for their personality before you commit.
Many shelter dogs already have some training - It's not unheard of to find a dog that's already housebroken and knows some tricks! Although you shouldn't expect this to carry over to their new home right away, it can make retraining incredibly easy.
It costs less - Most dogs at the shelter are already spayed/neutered and up to date on their shots. If they aren't, many vets in town will give you a discount on these services for adopting.
You're saving a life - Feel great about taking your new friend home to its new happy comfortable life!
Make a choice that fits you - If you like to spend your weekends curled up by the TV, it's probably best to stay away from dogs with high energy and dogs bred for hunting. On the other hand if you're looking for a new running partner, a snuggly dog may not be your best bet. Do some research on breeds to get an idea of what might suit you - but keep in mind breed guidelines don't always fit specific dogs, especially mixed breeds.
It will take some time - to get your dog settled into its new home. Keep in mind that your new friend doesn't know what's happening and he/she may assume your house is another temporary placement. Some dogs will display behavior issues in the beginning because they are scared! It's usually nothing that a lot of love and a little training can't fix.
Use all your resources - If you and your new friend are having some trouble adjusting, don't forget that there are ALWAYS resources available, from your local vet, to trainers, and even local pet stores. And remember doggy daycare! A tired dog is a good dog.
If adopting's not for you, you can still support your local shelter with donations of money, food, bedding, toys, treats, or really anything related to pets!
We sometimes foster dogs from the Pott County Humane Society, Animal Doctor in Junction City, and various citizens of Manhatan who can no longer provide proper care for their dog. Please check back frequently and feel free to come meet them in person!
All our fosters can be found on PetFinder
